President Libbi Fletcher's remarks on the 2007-08 season

My how time flies!!!!   Our first year as the Metro Detroit USBC Association has come and gone already.   It was a very busy year for the Board of Directors and our staff.  And the changes and challenges just keep on coming!

This past year, we provided tournaments for every age group, gender, and team make up that our association represents.  From the Adult/Youth, to the Jr. Masters, to the Masters and Queens, Senior Masters and Senior Team, as well as our Open, Women’s, Youth and Mixed Team Championship tournaments.  We have also support the Women’s 500 Club and the Pontiac and Detroit 600 Club tournaments. It was a very busy, exciting, and successful tournament year.

Of course, the most exciting tournaments of this 2007-2008 bowling season will be hosting the 2008 USBC Women’s Championship tournament, as well as the 2008 USBC Youth Championship and Jr. Gold Tournaments.  We are very proud to be hosting these premier events and hope that you will participate, volunteer and support these events as we showcase our bowling community on the national level.

Another aspect of the association is to support organizations such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation with our Bowl for the Cure Events.  The MDUSBC, in conjunction with leagues, proprietors and all of our wonderful supporters, proudly raised over $22,000 last year!!!  That is just awesome!  Thanks to all of you for your support and this year’s events will be bigger and better than last year.  Talk to your leagues about having a Bowl for the Cure fundraiser!  Another wonderful cause is the Bowlers to Veterans Link, or BVL.  The BVL provides much needed support nationally to our Veterans Hospitals.  MDUSBC held our first ever fund-raiser last year during Veteran’s Day weekend.  We raised over $2,600…come on, I know we can do much better than that!!!!   Watch our website for information regarding this year’s event in November and come out and bowl and support our troops and honor our veterans who have given so much so that we have the freedom to participate in our great sport!!!!

As I stated in this column last year, the success of this organization will depend upon the commitment of its Board of Directors, as well as our volunteers.  Last year, we were able to train 80 volunteers to be lane representatives.  WE NEED MORE!  If you are interested in being trained to be a representative for the association at one of our 91 bowling centers, please let us know!  We need your help to make this association the best in the United States .  If you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors, applications will be available soon on our website to apply to the Nominating Committee for consideration to serve on the Board of Directors or Youth Committee.  How about coaching?  Fund Raising? Tournament support?  Let us know what you love doing and can contribute to a specific area.  We would be happy to have you!

Please keep an eye (or mouse) on our website for information on everything that is going on in Metro Detroit Bowling.  Also read the Bowler’s Digest and the local newspapers for more exciting news on bowling in the Bowling Capital of the World!   Have a great bowling season!

Yours in Bowling,

Libbi Fletcher
